To accurately portray the younger Jake LaMotta, De Niro trained with LaMotta until LaMotta felt he was ready to box professionally. The film, Raging Bull, released in 1980, was initially only a minor box office success, but eventually became a huge critical success both for director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro, who gained about 60 pounds during the shooting of the film to play the older LaMotta in later scenes.
